Jeremiah 20:9
“But if I say I’ll never mention the lord or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!
This is how I feel! I have to share about the Lord. I had struggled for many years with evangelism. The reason for this was the message I was taught to preach by modern day evangelism methods. This modern method only shares a small part of who God is, the message goes something like this:
You have a God shaped hole in your heart and only God can fill it, If you accept Jesus he will give you a new heart and love, peace, happiness, joy and contentment.
This was not my experience. After I became a Christian God made me a new creature and the desires that I once had were no longer there. This caused conflict because in an instance I was a new person but those around me were not. As the old saying goes Garbage in Garbage out, it took about 2 years to get a lot of garbage out of me. This included wrong concepts of God, some habits that were still trying to keep a foot hold.
So after becoming a Christian I did have joy and peace. But my joy was based on the fact that God who I now serve was not giving me what I deserved, which was a place in the eternal lake of fire, but I had the peace of knowing that His word was true and I could rely on Him in all circumstance.
The dilemma came when trying to share about Jesus using modern evangelism methods. People did not seem to need Jesus, A lot of people professed to already have joy, peace, love, and happiness. Trying to convince them that the happiness that Jesus gave was different seemed so empty and shallow. When somebody did “accept Jesus” they never really seemed to be very broken by there sin. Most of the time people seemed to have the attitude sure I’ll give this jesus a try.
Then a few years ago I was introduce to a teaching by Ray Comfort called “Hells Best Kept Secret” http://www.livingwaters.com/learn/hellsbestkeptsecret.htm . This teaching showed me the reasons why modern day evangelism was ineffective. I encourage you to listen to this message.
I'll write more later, Until then,
